When winter and negligent drivers collide

We are getting into the time of year when people are sick of winter and ready for spring. Unfortunately, that could still be several weeks away, which means the threat of snow, ice and cold will continue to make driving unpredictable for Pennsylvania motorists.

This time of year can be especially risky for motorists in this state because there isn't the same awareness drivers often have in the depths of winter. People start taking more risks and being more reckless because they think winter is over. Just recently, drivers who might have gotten a little too confident after some warm weather caused several accidents when they were caught off guard by some snow.

What this means is that there is still an increased risk of accidents. Elements like ice, snow and slush can make every mistake and every risky move more dangerous, which too many drivers fail to recognize.

For the next few weeks, it will be crucial that drivers remain focused and alert on the road. To avoid accidents, you will want to:

  • Give other drivers plenty of space
  • Remember that speed limits are in place to reflect ideal road conditions; slowing down is crucial when the roads are wet and slippery
  • Wear your seat belt
  • Avoid distractions and be prepared to stop
  • Keep in mind that warmer weather doesn't mean roads will immediately be dry

Drivers who fail to do these things can be putting others and themselves at risk of being seriously injured in an accident. Dangerous driving is bad enough at any time of year, but winter weather can magnify any bad move and quickly lead to a crash.

If you have been injured in an accident, the damages you have suffered can last long after the winter weather is officially behind us. With this in mind, you may want to consult an attorney to examine your options for pursuing a legal claim and maximum compensation for your physical, emotional and financial injuries.
