Pennsylvania truckers honored for 25 years accident-free driving

In order to drive a tractor-trailer safely on Pennsylvania’s busy streets and highways, you need skill, patience, an understanding of traffic laws and a relentless focus on the vehicles around you. Those who manage to drive a big rig safely for years deserve recognition for their dedication to hauling goods without causing a truck accident that results in injuries.

The United Parcel Service recently recognized 65 Pennsylvania drivers who “have achieved 25 or more years of accident-free driving.”

UPS says it employs more than 4,200 drivers in our state. Among those honored is John Allen, a trucker who makes a trip from the eastern part of the state down to West Virginia and back four times a week. And he’s done that week after week without a wreck for a full quarter of a century.

“I think every driver is working toward this,” he said. He added that it’s tough diving any kind of vehicle safely in today’s traffic.

“And it’s getting tougher all the time,” he said. “Nowadays, drivers are texting away and are totally distracted from their driving.. The law says not to do it but they do it anyway. It’s crazy out there . . . very scary.”

He said that the secret to his safety success is that he stays away from other trucks and cars as much as possible. He said that he often just gets into the right lane and lets other motorists pass his rig.

A UPS spokesperson lauded all the drivers nationwide who have been able to stay accident-free. “Their attention to detail has kept them safe and has helped improve public safety.”

Unfortunately, not all truckers are as dedicated to safety. Far too often, fatigued, distracted or careless truck drivers cause serious injuries to innocent motorists.
