Infotainment technology in cars causing driver distractions

Pennsylvania drivers who are looking to buy a new car with the latest technology may be interested to learn that these features could increase their chances of becoming involved in a car accident. According to a study conducted for AAA, some of the new technology going into vehicle dashboards, such as infotainment systems, can be distracting to drivers.

For the study, researchers looked at the visual and cognitive demand of different tasks, including using GPS devices, touchscreens and radios. Researchers also recorded the time it took participants to complete each task. It was found that even just listening to the radio was distracting on some level, causing participants to drive under the speed limit, fail to stop at stop signs and swerve out of their lanes. When using GPS or sending a text, drivers were both visually and mentally distracted for at least 40 seconds.

AAA recommends that automakers should be focusing on reducing driving distractions behind the wheel. For example, some infotainment systems allow drivers to check their social media or search the web, things they should not be doing while driving. Further, actually using the systems that are put into cars often requires multiple steps, keeping drivers' eyes and minds off the road in front of them and increasing the risks of a car accident.

When distracted drivers cause car accidents, those who are involved in the incident could suffer serious injuries, such as traumatic brain injuries and broken bones. In worst-case scenarios, a person could even become paralyzed or lose a limb. A personal injury attorney could assist with gathering evidence that proves that the distracted driver was liable for the accident. The attorney may also work directly with the insurance company to reach an appropriate settlement that covers the cost of damages, including pain and suffering depending on the severity of the injuries.
