4 ways to stay safer on the roads this Fourth of July

The Fourth of July weekend is right around the corner. While most people see this holiday as a time for fireworks, barbecues and parades, keep in mind that it is also a time for devastating crashes on Pennsylvania roads due to an increase of dangerous drivers.

In fact, according to statistics from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Independence Day is the deadliest day of the year in terms of motor vehicle accidents. During this holiday, people make bad decisions and big mistakes when they get behind the wheel of a car, and these poor choices put other people in danger. Below, we examine four things you can do to stay safe and hopefully avoid an accident.

  1. Beware of bad drivers. During the holidays, there are a high number of distracted, drunk and reckless drivers. Look for swerving, speeding and other unsafe behaviors and try to stay away. Be especially cautious at busy intersections where drivers might run red lights or veer into oncoming traffic.
  2. Be patient. Everyone is in a hurry to get to their destination over holiday weekends. However, getting into an accident because you are driving too fast or following others too closely could cost you a lot more than the few minutes you were trying to save.
  3. Stay off the roads during peak hours, if you can help it. Try to minimize driving at night, and consider getting an earlier or later start to avoid peak traffic hours.
  4. Know where you are going. It's easy to get lost when you are in a new place or unfamiliar with your surroundings. Before you get on the road, review the directions and enter in your destination on your GPS or in your phone. If you get lost, pull over and look at a map or ask someone for help.

These are basic precautions every person should take whenever they get behind the wheel to avoid serious car accidents. Though, they can be especially critical over the Fourth of July when there are more drivers on the road and more people capable of making risky, dangerous mistakes.
