3 reasons not to deal with insurance adjusters alone

If you were recently in a crash, you probably are dealing with painful injuries, serious damage to your vehicle and a lot of unanswered questions. In these situations, it can feel natural to rehash every detail of the crash to whoever asks as a way to work through the situation yourself.

However, you may not want to do this to the insurance adjuster who calls you in the hours after your crash. This can work against you and any legal claim you may decide to file for a few reasons.

  1. You may give information that could negatively impact a settlement offer. With some exceptions, an insurance claims adjuster is typically going to be interested in saving the insurance company for whom they work money. Whether you realize it or not, you might give them information that they can use to deny coverage or minimize payments.
  2. You could agree to something that is not in your best interests. Without a background in insurance or an advocate of your own, you might agree to a settlement that is smaller than you deserve.
  3. The adjuster is not on your side. Again, the adjuster's job is to assess damage, then calculate and negotiate a settlement on behalf of the insurance company. Even though he or she may be very polite, understanding and conversational, the adjuster is not going to help you negotiate a fair settlement or guide you through the process in a way that prioritizes your rights and needs.

With all this in mind, we urge car accident victims in Pennsylvania to remember that you have the right to consult a personal injury attorney after an accident. A legal representative can calculate damages, negotiate with adjusters and contest any unfair settlement offered by insurance companies.

You should not have to deal with the complications and stress of dealing with insurance adjusters, policy coverage challenges and settlement offers in the wake of a serious accident. You should be able to focus on your recovery. You can do this more easily with a legal advocate fighting on your behalf.
